The snowy owl is one of the largest owls. It is an important link in its ecosystem and represents the perfect behavioral and morphological adaptation to a harsh and complex environment. In the wild its life expectancy is about 10 years.
The female snowy owl is larger than the male (2.3 kg against 1.8 kg approximately) like most diurnal raptors and owls but unlike most other bird families. On average, individuals of this species measure 55 to 70 cm in height, 142 to 166 cm in wingspan, for 1.6 to 2.5 kg. The adult male is almost entirely white while the female is darker and has dark brown streaked feathers.
